Ticket machines protected from burglary
Ticket machines containing cash can become a target for criminals. The public transport company, Skånetrafiken, is aiming at completely eliminating cash handling on board the trains and transferring it to the ticket machines. Skånetrafiken protects their machines with a burglar alarm connected to Securitas. This has proven to be a very successful solution.
Every year, more and more Swedes choose to travel by train. In Skåne, the southernmost region of Sweden, local trains and trains to and from Denmark have long been a well-known sight on the plains. Each year, Skånetrafiken, the company in charge of these trains, experiences a great increase in passengers. The statistics for 2007 show yet another record year for train travel and the trains running across the bridge between Sweden and Denmark represent the single greatest increase, 26.4 percent.
Passengers can buy tickets for these trains in ticket machines on the platforms. The machines accept credit cards as well as cash.
Each ticket machine has a burglar alarm connected to a Securitas alarm monitoring center, which ensures that the appropriate action is instantly taken in case of an alarm. Securitas guards are quickly at the site if needed.
“The machines are subject to approximately 20 burglary attempts each year and the result of our collaboration with Securitas is that their guards, as well as the police on a number of occasions, have been there to interrupt an ongoing burglary attempt,” says Mats Lundberg, Head of IT operations at Skånetrafiken.
The collaboration between Skånetrafiken and Securitas goes back to the beginning of the 1990s and Skånetrafiken currently has 88 ticket machines connected to Securitas on train platforms all over Skåne. In addition to this, they also use Securitas as their supplier of security services for all their offices.
“We have a long tradition of working with Securitas, and I have to say that we are very happy with the collaboration,” says Mats Lundberg.
